local harvest

I came across this website called local harvest, and I am very excited about it. We often talk about buying locally, but it is kind of overwhelming. Where is a person even to start? But this website lists local farms and what they grow, along with contact info. Or you can buy online from un-local, but still small family farms and they will ship it to you. Now that I am a wife/mom I often think about what I will choose to feed my family. I am not into the food that is processed or has hormones or pesticides. I don't think that is healthy, and will choose to keep my family away from those things as much as possible. I think I was born in the wrong era. I would love to live in the "Little House on the Prairie" days. How great to be so self-sufficient. You milk your cows and gather your eggs, grow you own garden, etc. Sound pretty wonderful to me. Guess for now I'll have to settle for having my vegetable garden, canning fruit, and trying to buy locally.
Oh, and my husband bike commutes now...that must count for something. :)

Kristi..wow, i've never heard of this place before, but now i can't wait to check it out! When you have time, check out No Impact Man's blog. He and his wife and daughter live in NYC and are living for a year with no electricity, shopping locally, no cars, gas, etc. It's really inspiring. I've been shopping at the farmer's market in oly lately trying to find more local foods...and hitting those roadside stands for cherries, strawberries. Going to check out Hunter Farms, too. Tozier's sells locally-raised beef at Home Meats (? I think). I've been reading more and more about simplicity and sustainability and trying to make slow, small, positive changes..Love the cloth shopping bags, just wish I wouldn't always leave them in the car! Another good blog you'd probably love..http://eyesofwonder.typepad.com/
